Much has been written about the first generation Z28.
The information below will try to clear up some of the unknown and present the facts.
Chevrolet's overall plan was to get the new 1967 Camaro off the deck and up and running. The Z28
was the last link of their goal.
Step 1: Introduce the new 1967 Camaro line
Step 2: Introduce the new Camaro to the Indianapolis Raceway
Step 3: Get America what it wants-a 396/375hp big block car
Step 4: Enter the Trans Am race circuit with a 1967 car
Step 5: Step back and see for yourself all of the winning results
Few people knew that the original 1967 Z28 was going to be a high performance 283 engine, but on
actual Z28 work order #19621-34, here's what it states:
Remove engine and send to motor room
Install engine #19621-34-A high performance 283
Engine weight dressed out 572 lbs.
Date October 11, 1966
On October 21, 1966 the displacement of the new engine for the new option was a reality. They put
a 283 crank with a 327 bore hence creating a 302 cid, 4" bore, 3" stroke engine with a high revving capacity.
The Chevrolet Engineering Department had done their job well.
One question that has been recently brought to the surface-What is stock on a 1967 through
1969 Z28? Some people think that a stock Z28 should not have a crossram or transistorized
ignition system on it. This is
NONSENSE. The list of race, over-the-counter, or dealer-installed parts that could be ordered
for the Z28 is a long list. A 1967-1969 stock Z28 car that has been upgraded with crossram, cowl
plenum, factory headers, or whatever -- that owner should be commended
for helping preserve the racing heritage of the 302 Z28, as long as
those particular parts were available for the car in that model year.

Note: These are used for comparison. There are many documented
cars which do not fall into these
guidelines. Anything could have happened on the assembly line. |
